How to play OMI: the rules used at Welekade

OMI is a partnership trick-taking card game played in Sri Lanka. At our table, the computer fills the other three seats. Your partner sits opposite you.

  1. The pack: 32 cards — ace, king, queen, jack, 10, 9, 8 and 7 in each suit. Ace is highest and 7 is lowest.
  2. The deal: Deal and play pass to the right. Everyone receives four cards. The player to the dealer's right chooses trumps from those first four, then everyone receives four more.
  3. The lead: The trump caller leads the first trick. Each player contributes one card. You must follow the suit led if you hold it; otherwise, you may play any card.
  4. Winning a trick: The highest trump wins. If no trump is played, the highest card of the suit led wins. The winner leads the next trick.
  5. Winning the match: After eight tricks, the hand is scored. The first team to reach 10 tokens wins the match.

Before you sit down

Is Welekade free, and do I need an app?

It is free to play in a browser. There is no app or APK to download. The game needs JavaScript, WebGL and an internet connection; it does not run offline.

Can I walk around the village?

Choose Walk around at the table to explore a limited area around the shop with a visible character, an on-screen joystick and a draggable camera. The card game pauses while villagers keep moving. Back to the table returns you to your hand.

Can I play with friends online?

The current mode is single-player against computer-controlled players. Online multiplayer is not available yet.

Can I play in Sinhala?

Yes. Choose Sinhala or English in the lobby or Settings. The game uses familiar Sinhala card-table language.

Will my hand survive a reload?

The game saves your match on the server and keeps a recovery key in this browser. Reloading can restore your hand, trumps and score. Clearing site data or switching browsers loses access to that recovery key.

What if the game will not load inside Messenger?

Use the app's menu to open the game in Safari or Chrome, or copy the link into your browser. The loading fallback also provides retry and copy-link controls.

Are carrom and draughts available?

OMI is the playable game today. Carrom and draughts are marked as coming soon.
